Solar feed in Tariifs have made domestic solar PV systems a real money maker and money saver!

If I install a typical solar PV system of about 2kW, this could cost less than £10,000 depending on the particular installation, the return on this investment is three fold:

The Feed in Tariff will return a lump sum of 41.3p per kWh generated whether you use it or not

Any electricity generated you can use, this can save you about 10p per unit of electricity that you don't have to buy (use the washing machine midday?).

Any surplus electricity generated can be sold back to your electricity utility at about 3p per unit.

The Feed in Tariff is inflation proofed for 25 years, you have a contract that guarantees payment for this period.

With the every rising cost of electricity, you are cushioned somewhat.

What will it cost?

A large house with a significant south facing roof area might just about cope with a 4kW system, the maximum size that both gains the higher incentive and will not require specific permission from your utility provider due to the size of system.

An installation of this size will benefit with a certain economy of scale, one set of scaffolding, cables, connections etc. and the cost can be brought down to £16 - 18,000.

A smaller installation might cost slightly more propertionally - the major cost remains in the price of the panels - but remains a great investment.
