What grants or support are available
While grants for electricity generating technologies are no longer available, there is still the chance to get a grant for a heat generating system.
These are aquired through the Low Carbon Building Scheme which is run by DECC (Department for Energy and Climate Change)
The grants, where they are available, are also based on your home having many basic energy efficiency measures already implemented.
This will include loft insulation to a requirered depth, cavity wall insulation, double glazing and energy saving light bulbs.
Applications are taken on a first come first served basis, your selected installer should be able to assist you in this. Make sure that you use a certified installer.
What About the CEN grant of £1,500 I have read about?
This is theoretically available but there is, as far as we know, only one installer who is still in the scheme. The scheme required such a low price from the installer that it became impossible to provide a quality system for the price, certainly not in the South East of England.
Realistically, an installation that will be able to gain this grant funding doen't exist for properties in Kent and the South East.
Why are they dispensing with the grant funding?
An upfront grant to go with installation is being superceded by the Renewable Heat Incentive which will pay the householder a regular amount based on the size of their installation.
Renewable Heat Incentive
This is a scheme for paying people for generating heat without emitting carbon that is planned for introduction in 2011. To benefit from this, your installer must be registered under the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme).
